Dining Culture in Japan – Quick Etiquette Guide:
Traditional restaurants: sit on floor cushions at low tables (tatami rooms)
Shoes off at the entrance, indoor slippers provided
Use separate “toilet slippers” for the restroom
Pay at the front counter, not at the table
Tipping is not customary
Izakaya = Japanese pubs | Ryotei = exclusive, traditional restaurants
Use chopsticks properly:
✘ Don’t stick them upright into rice (symbol of death)
✘ Don’t point or push dishes with them
