Hiking New Zealand

New Zealand is a true hiking paradise. From lush rainforests and volcanic plateaus to alpine ridgelines and turquoise bays — the country offers an incredibly diverse range of landscapes to explore on foot. Whether you're into short walks, scenic day hikes or challenging multi-day adventures, there's something for every level and every pace.

In New Zealand, longer hikes are often called "tramps" rather than hikes. Especially popular are the so-called Great Walks — a collection of nine iconic multi-day tracks carefully managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). These routes are designed to showcase the most spectacular parts of the country, with well-maintained trails, huts or campsites, and limited bookings to protect the fragile environment.

You can find more details about the Great Walks, including maps, hut bookings and season info, on the official DOC website: www.doc.govt.nz/greatwalks

But don’t be fooled into thinking the Great Walks are the only way to experience New Zealand’s wilderness. Some of the most breathtaking views can be reached on shorter day hikes, many of which are easily accessible from major towns or national parks. From panoramic summit tracks to forest waterfalls and alpine lakes — there are countless lesser-known gems waiting to be discovered off the beaten path.
